I’ll Announce My Presidential Candidate In January – Wike

by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele December 23, 2022
written by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike says he will make his preferred presidential candidate known in January 2023.

The governor, who stated this on Thursday, said he will also campaign for his adopted candidate nationwide.

“From January next year, I will campaign to my people whom they will vote for,” Wike said when he commissioned the tenth flyover by his administration in the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers.

“So, all of you who have been in suspense, who have been saying all kinds of things, abusing me, wait. January is here.

“Not only will I tell them (my people) whom to vote, I will move from state to state (for campaigns) and why they should vote for the person, nothing will happen,” he said.

Following the PDP presidential primary in May where he lost out, Wike has been at loggerheads with Atiku Abubakar over the chairmanship of Iyorchia Ayu.

After the presidential primary, Atiku, a former Vice President, stung Wike when he passed over his closest rival at the primary and chose Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate.

Wike, with four other PDP governors known as the G5 or the Integrity Group, have insisted that Benue-born Ayu must step down for a southerner as a precondition to support the 2023 ambition of Atiku.

Earlier in December, the Director General of Atiku’s Campaign, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State visited one of Wike’s ally and a G5 member, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State in a move to resolve the crisis but no success was achieved.

Later the same day, Atiku, on Channels Television’s The People’s Townhall, said he has met Wike five times to resolve the issue but there is no end in sight. Ortom and Wike subsequently shunned Atiku who was in Benue earlier this month for campaigns.

Last month, Wike promised logistics support for the campaigns of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi; and his New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) counterpart, Rabiu Kwankwaso. Wike has also of late hobnobbed with All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwarts like Adams Oshiomhole and Governors Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), and Ben Ayade (Cross River).

While Wike and his allies have not been seen to campaign for Atiku, it is not clear whether they will support Obi, Kwankwaso or APC’s Bola Tinubu in the contest for Aso Rock’s top job.

Labour Party Postpones Ekiti, Ondo Presidential Campaign Rallies

by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele December 14, 2022
written by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele

The Labour Party has postponed its presidential campaign rallies in Ekiti and Ondo states.

This was made public by the party on its social media page.

The party blamed unavoidable and unusual circumstances beyond its control.

The LP, however, promised to announce new dates for its rally in the states.

The statement read, “Due to some unavoidable and unusual circumstances beyond control, our earlier scheduled presidential campaign rally in Ekiti and Ondo for 15th and 16th December 2023 are hereby postponed. A new date will be announced. We regret the inconvenience caused by this.”

This comes a day after its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Baba Ahmed-Datti, moved their campaign train to Kogi State.

Since the October 18 commencement of rallies by the LP, the party has not been consistent with its schedule.

The rally held in Kogi on Tuesday had been announced to be held on October 23. Other rallies scheduled for October that failed to hold included the ones meant for Niger, Kwara, Bayelsa, Rivers and Cross River.

The party has also failed to stage the rallies scheduled for November in Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, and Sokoto states.

2023 Election: Retaining Presidency In The North Is Bad As Muslim-Muslim Ticket, Wike Insists

by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele December 12, 2022
written by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has told those who say that Nigeria is not ripe for muslim-muslim ticket not to also justify and embrace the efforts at retaining the presidency in the North.

Governor Wike spoke on Sunday at the special dedication service for the Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2023 General Election Campaigns Rallies, which held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Harcourt.

Governor Wike maintained that those involved in such double-speak and trying to hoodwink some gullible few, know that they are insulting the sensibility of well meaning Nigerians who want a united country that advances national cohesion.

“You play on people’s intelligence; you say Nigeria is not ripe for muslim-muslim ticket, I agree. But Nigeria is ripe for presidency to remain in one zone? I mean, just look at the insult. You blow hot and cold.”

Governor Wike urged those people who delightfully condemn the muslim-muslim ticket as wrong, should also know that Nigerians are also saying it is wrong to retain the presidency in the North after President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Most of you just sit there, you don’t ask yourselves questions. Somebody continues to sell this kind of cheap ideas. You don’t ask the person, I agree with what you are saying but look at what we are saying here.”

He further added, “Your party wants the presidency to go to the same zone where president Muhammadu Buhari is coming from. Who is cheating who?”

The Rivers State governor also spoke reminding the church of the need for it to participate in the voting process. However, he said, it should not get involved to the extent of serving as cannon fodder against any political party or political actor.

Governor Wike pleaded with the church to be careful and resist those politicians who come to mobilise them as if there is a religious war to wage.

“It is not now that politics have come, you want to come and tell the church a different story for your own personal interest. We have to be careful so that the church is not destroyed. Because, all of us, for example, we are Anglicans, I will not allow anybody, for his selfish interest to destroy the church of Nigeria. I will not allow that.”

Meanwhile, governor Wike has warned that his administration will not allow those who in the past instigated wanton destruction of lives and property in the State under the guise of politics to repeat same.

Governor Wike appealed to members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the State to resist deliberate attempt by some disgruntled and inconsequential politicians to provoke them ahead of the 2023 general elections.

He described as ludicrous and cheap blackmail the allegation by Dr. Abiye Sekibo and some of his associates that the State government recently resent thugs to attack them.

“Some people are saying we sent thugs to attack them. You see, when people see failure, they will begin to plan excuses. These are people all of us know our background and how we have won election in our various local government. I remember one of them during the last election could not even go to his local government. He ran down to Port Harcourt and stayed with me. Instead of you to tell your principal, this will be difficult for me, you are giving excuses.”

The governor who emphatically declared that he has never engaged in any acts of political violence in all his political career, warn those who might be planning to plunge the State into chaos to have a rethink.

“Anybody who knows me know, that I have never been violent. If I am violent, I won’t go to court. But we know those who planted killings in this State when they were Secretary to government. We know them, but that killing will not happen again in the State. We will not give you the opportunity to try it again.”

Governor Wike explained that the reason why Dr Sekibo and his associates are begrudging him is simply because he did not support their ambition to emerge to get the PDP governorship ticket.

On the issue of Executive Order 21 and 22, the governor advised politicians in the State to approach the court rather than take the laws into their hands. He insisted that until the court declares otherwise, the government will ensure full implementation of the orders.

“The Federal Government has come up with so many Executive Orders, we didn’t kill anybody, but we went to court to challenge such others. The Federal Government has done a lot of things that Rivers state had challenged in court, and by the grace of God, we won.

“If there is anything any government has done which you feel you are not comfortable with, you have to go to court and challenge it, and not just to come out to shout they don’t want you to campaign. Why will anybody not like you to campaign.”

Governor Wike declared that there was nothing wrong with the PDP dragging other political parties to court over their failure to comply with Independent National Electoral Commission electoral guidelines. According to him, sure litigations are part of Nigeria’s electoral process.

“When I know you have made mistake not to run an election, I should leave you? All we are saying is INEC comply with the law. You made us to comply with the law. Why are these people not complying with the law. Why should you allow us to pass through the process we passed through and you did not allow these other people to pass through that process. We said look, this is what the law says. INEC is like you are being partial . It is like you are applying this law differently to different persons.”

In his sermon, the cathedral archdeacon of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Venerable Obinna Ochulor spoke on the topic; “God our refuge” and exhorted the congregation to acknowledge the infallibility of God always.

He pointed to how people often rush to the altar of God to make vows when they are either experiencing critical situation but would refuse to return to fulfil them when they have triumphed.

While vows are important to be fulfilled, he admonished the congregation and particularly the PDP family to trust in God as their defence and shield so that they can enjoy his protection against all shades of evil.

Tinubu Slams Arise TV, Says They Want To Use Him To Make Money

by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele December 5, 2022
written by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says he is a marketable individual and won’t allow anyone to use him to make money.

Tinubu said this on Monday while speaking at Chatham House in the United Kingdom.

Responding to a question on why he’s not been having one-on-one conversations with Nigerians like his counterparts, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Tinubu said he rejected invitations to attend town hall meetings and debates because the organisers want to use him to make money.

He said, “I see myself as a marketable individual, they want to use me to make money and I am saying no.”

This is believed to be a response to Arise TV’s persistent invitation to Tinubu to join its townhall meeting to tell Nigerians about his plan for the country ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

It would be recalled that Arise TV’s invitation to Tinubu to join its townhall meeting recently sparked a controversy between the TV station and the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council (APC-PCC).

2023: Labour Party Chair Gives Reasons For Delayed Manifesto, Says Obi Is The Only Candidate With Competence

by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele December 1, 2022
written by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele

The Labour Party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, has given reasons for delaying the release of the party’s much-anticipated manifesto.

According to him, the party is not in a rush to release its manifesto because the Labour Party’s focus extends beyond the 2023 general election.

People have beautiful manifestos and have made various promises, according to Abure, but this election is not about promises.

It was learned that the Labour Party chair, while speaking about the party’s surge in popularity, said people are tired of the existing political structures.

Abure explained that over time, people learn to discard products that do not meet their needs, citing the current political situation as an example.

by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele November 28, 2022
written by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele

In preparation for the 2023 general election, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has ordered the distribution of weapons for officers across the country.

He also ordered all Commissioners of Police in the country to activate the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security to engage stakeholders in evolving strategies for mitigating threats to the elections.

The IG revealed this in a statement issued on Sunday by the Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

The IG noted that political violence, hate speech, threats, political intolerance and misinformation were all potential threats to national security interests,

“Similarly, the IGP has ordered a fresh distribution of gadgets, anti-riot gears, and personal protective equipment for police officers across the federation in preparation for the 2023 general election security management duty.

“The items include non-lethal weapons such as electro-shocks, rubber bullets, water cannons, tear gas, riot guns etc., for crowd control and to minimise casualty risk in eventual confrontations with subversive elements.

“The IG reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to the protection of our democratic heritage and national security interests, while he called on other security agencies and stakeholders who constitute ICCES, as well as members of the public to deliberately aid the NPF in its drive to ensure the safety and security of all and sundry before, during, and after the 2023 general elections,” the statement read.

INEC Releases Guidelines, Bans Campaigns In Religious Gatherings

by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele November 26, 2022
written by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele

With the 2023 general elections three months away, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released its guidelines for the conduct of political activities.

The commission, in a six-page document titled “Conduct of Political Rallies, Processions and Campaigns,” prohibited the use of abusive language and hate speech as well as campaigns and political rallies in places of worship.

It also stated that no person attending a political rally, procession or campaign should be in possession of any offensive weapon.

The only people authorised to carry arms at such events, according to INEC, are police officers or members of security agencies who are specifically posted to be present at the respective political rallies or processions.

“No political campaign shall hold in places designated as religious centres, police stations and public offices.

“Political campaign shall not involve the use of abusive languages or any form of hate speech.

“State apparatus including the media shall not be employed to the advantage or
disadvantage of any political party or candidate at any election,” it stated.

INEC noted that the objective of political rallies was to project, offer, sensitize and create awareness about the party’s symbol, flag, slogan, and manifesto.

The commission mandated political parties to submit a notification of the schedule of their campaigns stating the date, time, venue, agenda and list of members of the organising committee and police approval within the jurisdiction of the campaigns, within a minimum period no later than 10 days to the commencement of their campaigns.

It added that political parties and candidates should conduct campaigns based on the constitution and manifestoes, complying with the provisions of Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022 issued by the commission, political parties codes of conduct, regulations and guidelines that may be issued by the National Broadcasting Commission, as well as COVID-19 safety protocols and other public health regulations and measures.

2023 Election: Tinubu’s Records In Lagos State Stand Him Out- Asari Dokubo

2023 Election: Tinubu’s Records In Lagos State Stand Him Out, Asari Dokubo

by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele November 25, 2022
written by Oluwamuyiwa Oyedele

Niger Delta activist Asari Dokubo has thrown his weight behind Bola Tinubu, saying the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate is miles ahead of other contenders for Aso Rock.

“For the presidential election, I am with Tinubu because I saw what he did in Lagos State and the legacies he left behind,” he said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday.

As far as he is concerned, Tinubu was instrumental in the development of Lagos State and helped turned the fortunes of the former Nigerian capital.

“Lagos has transformed from what it used to be like a big ghetto, a junkyard to a global centre and one of the biggest economies in the whole of Africa. Somebody kickstarted it; somebody laid the foundation,” he maintained.

According to him, those claiming otherwise should also know that even in the biggest cities across the world, there are people who are not okay with the government. This, he maintained, is expected in a place like Lagos where the APC flagbearer has succeeded in laying a good foundation.

While he said other contenders like the Labour Party’s Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) were former governors and in a similar league like Tinubu, he said Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) does not have such a credential.

“Atiku has actually never actually handled executive power. He was a spare tire. He was a vice president,” Dokubo said.

The Niger Delta activist said though PDP, Labour Party, and the APC’s manifestoes are all great, execution depends on individuals as he maintained that Tinubu is the best choice for the presidential position.
