LTV, LSFA to collaborate in promoting football in Lagos State

by Emmanuel Okikiola September 8, 2023
written by Emmanuel Okikiola

The Lagos State Football Association led by its Chairman, Ogboni Fouad Oki on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to Lagos Television.

The LSFA’s visit, amongst other objectives was to extend a hand of fellowship to the management of the foremost state owned Television and seek support towards programs and activities of the board.

Oki said his board is ready to work in tandem with the indigenous station to build a sustainable foundation for a vibrant football industry and culture in order to make Lagos the leading sports destination in Africa.

“Sports reportage in Lagos has alway been through LTV and when you talk sports in Nigeria, it’s Lagos, not just because of the population, more because of the passion. Today, sports and football in particular is going down and we are trying to apply CPR to bring it back and begin to help the sector to again, regain the stage that he should be. One of the way to do it, is to collaborate in bringing to various homes, Football from the nooks and crannies of Lagos State and if there’s any television station that can do justice to that, it’s the people’s station, LTV”.

Oba Cup, Ibile Cup, Principal’s Cup, Junior League and Street Soccer are some of the tournaments the LSFA is planing to organize to engage the meaningfully and regenerate development from the grassroots, Oki explained that through collaborative partnership, both parties will can generate revenues.

“Football has gotten into the era of big business, the just concluded FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the TV right alone was in the region of 220 million U.S dollars. In our clime, it’s coming at zero cost to the FA and that negatively impact on the players and the clubs. It also negatively impact on LTV with its comparative advantage and its reach. So, for us to develop football, we must work together, we must take football into the homes of every Lagosian either by streaming on social media or conventional media and this is why we are here and I therefore urge you to take advantage of our offer and let’s work together”.

General Manager, Lagos Television, Adesola Kosoko thanked the members of the LSFA sfor the visit as she assured of the station’s collaboration to revive football in the center of excellence.

“Bringing the Street Soccer and all other activities of the LSFA to Lagos Television has added an extra feather and given me more strength to go through. Content is key and what the LSFA is bringing is not just content but also opportunity to generate revenue for the station. So, I want to promise you that I’m wholeheartedly accepting this partnership and willing to work on this project with you. It will be of great benefit to us, to you but most importantly to Lagos’ that is the reason we are here. This is Lagos and we will proclaim, celebrate and let the World know what Lagos is made off”.

The LSFA Chairman was accompanied to LTV by chairman of the Street Soccer Committee, Mr Bolaji Yusuf and members; Yomi Kuku, Phemmy Adetula, Deji Aladegbemi and others.

NAF is critical to success of Govt’s 8-point agenda, says Dr Betta Edu

by Emmanuel Okikiola September 6, 2023
written by Emmanuel Okikiola

The Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu has stated that in view of the numerous capabilities of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), it remains a key enabler to the successful implementation of the 8-point agenda of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration.

The Minister stated this on 5 September 2023, when she paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar.

She noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to reducing the number of Nigerians in dire need of humanitarian assistance irrespective of their location.

However, she stated, this will only be realizable if her Ministry can have easy access to some of the victims who reside in inaccessible areas. It was in view of the difficulty experienced in gaining access to these locations that the Minister was at the NAF Headquarters to seek for assurance and solicit for assistance in the delivery of relief materials to the needy in areas hindered by difficult terrains or insecurity.

Speaking further, Dr Edu stated that families of NAF veterans as well as those who paid the supreme price while on active duty will be captured in the new expanded poverty alleviation programme set to be rolled on in some weeks to come.

To ensure that the appropriate NAF beneficiaries are captured under the expanded poverty alleviation programme, the Minister suggested for the establishment of a humanitarian desk officer at Headquarters NAF for ease of liaison with her Ministry during the compilation and submission of the list of beneficiaries.

She also used the opportunity of the visit to commend the NAF for its assistance to the Ministry and its parastatal in the areas of casualty evacuation, distribution of relief materials as well as evacuation of stranded Nigerians in conflict areas overseas.

Responding, Air Marshal Abubakar stated that the NAF and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Affairs have had a long history of collaboration either directly or through its numerous agencies. He assured the Minister of NAF’s readiness and willingness to assist her achieve the mandate of the Ministry and called for effective coordination which he said, is the cornerstone of any successful humanitarian operation.

The CAS went on to propose key areas where both the NAF and the Ministry can strengthen their partnership. According to him, “Our organizations can partner in the areas of joint training and capacity building as well as optimize disaster response protocols to enable us act swiftly, minimize duplication of efforts and ensure more efficient allocation of resources.” He also noted that close collaboration will ensure that aid gets to those in need in a timely and efficient manner.

The Minister, who was accompanied by senior officials of her ministry, also took time out to lay a wreath at the NAF Memorial arcade.

Why Ade Herself Featured at Our Event – EFCC

by Emmanuel Okikiola September 6, 2023
written by Emmanuel Okikiola

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, takes notice of the public reaction to the speaking engagement of Adedamola Adewale, (aka Ade Herself) at the NYSC Orientation lecture of August 31, 2023, in Lagos; with many questioning the Commission’s wisdom in recruiting a purported fraud suspect to educate the youths against cybercrime.

In a statement, the anti-graft agency said: “The public’s concern is duly acknowledged. Unfortunately, most of the comments bordered on lack of information on the status of the case involving Miss Adewale.

“It is important to state that the fraud charges brought against the Influencer by the Commission had been determined. Indeed, her presence in the Commission is pursuant to the judgement of the court that ordered the Commission to tap her talent as an actress, skit maker and social media influencer in a programme of reformation to dissuade other youths from getting entangled in cybercrimes.

“Her engagement with the Commission is part of her non-custodial sentence.”

“It shows the Governor is caring for him to have visited mother and the child at the hospital and the promise he made which gives hope. It is commendable.

Popular actress, Doyin Aggrey sets to hit movie screens with ‘Aiye Mi’

by Emmanuel Okikiola September 5, 2023
written by Emmanuel Okikiola

Still basking in the euphoria of the success recorded by her last film titled ‘Italian Gold’, popular Nollywood actress and producer, Doyin Aggrey is currently warming up to hit the screens with ‘Aiye Mi’, another blockbuster.

Doyin Aggrey is no doubt one of the few filmmakers who have carved a niche for themselves, as she attaches premium importance to the quality of films she produces.

Her previous film, ‘Italian Gold’ whose searchlight was beamed on people with fake lifestyles, exposes many ills of society, while teaching viewers the virtues of contentment. Little wonder the movie became an instant hit.

‘Italian Gold’ starred other thespians like Bolanle Ninalowo, Lizzy Anjorin, Baraka and many others.

Meanwhile, Aggrey is currently at the post-production stage of her newly shot film, ‘Aiye Mi’, which will hit movie screens soon.

‘Aiye Mi’, directed by award-winning Muhydeen S Ayinde, parades a notable cast like Aggrey Adedoyin (who is also the producer), Tina Mba, Kiki Bakare, Toyin Alausa, Rotimi Salami, Olayinka Solomon, Yomi Olorunlaiye, Yomi Adeyeri, Pelumi Adebayo and Temitope Duker.

It’s an interesting, suspense-filled story of a childless couple navigating difficult decisions.
As limited, fallible people, we can’t see the future or control circumstances, and the unforeseen consequences of our decisions… ‘What you sow is what you reap’ are great examples of how karma works.

Other films previously produced by Doyin Aggrey are; Omo Oko, Karamotu, Ina Okunkun, Ayalo, Alatoto, Ajike, Abikita Iya, Afi’emi, My Home and Iriri Laye.

Dr. Bennett Omalu: Celebrating one of Nigeria’s greatest exports to the world on his 55th birthday

by Emmanuel Okikiola September 4, 2023
written by Emmanuel Okikiola

Dr. Ifekandu Bennett Omalu is a native Of Urunnebo Village, Enugwu Ukwu In Njikoka Local Government Area Of Anambra State.

Born on September 1st, 1968. He attended both primary and secondary schools in Nigeria. And for his tertiary education he proceeded to the University of Nigeria Nsukka, where he acquired MBBS degree in Medicine and Surgery.

He is currently a Professor of medical pathology and laboratory science at the University of California.

Subsequently he acquired his MPH from the University of Pittsburgh and his MBA from Carnegie Mellon University. He is the first person in the world to discover and publish findings of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in American football players while working at the Allegheny County Coroner’s Office. He’s now the Chief Medical Examiner for San Joaquin County, California. And a professor at UC-Davis.

Dr. Bennet Omalu came to the United States in the 1990’s at the age of 26, to finish his Medical Residency. Through hard work that is just the nature of his Igbo race, he is today, one of the foremost Nero pathologists in the world and is best known for discovering and studying CTE, a degenerative brain condition affecting American football players.

This doctor from Anambra, Nigeria changed the perspective about the safety of some sports through his research into the lives of former N.F.L players. Later a study in Sweden confirmed him absolutely right by revealing that if your child suffers from one concussion they are more likely to die before the age of 42 and more likely to develop psychiatric issues. The Sweden research discovered that N.F.L players were dying or killing themselves less than 20yrs after retirement-which is in their 30’s usually. Exactly something Dr. Omalu confirmed years back.

Worried by the sad fate of some retired NFL players, Dr. Omalu went into research to find out why. In his research, he discovered that “Concussion” was the reason. Amazingly the facts where denied by NFL who felt threatened that his research will destroy their multi billion dollar industry. They fought back to make sure that his research was hidden for years. Dr. Omalu didn’t give up out of fear, getting the truth across to the world was far more important to him than his life. As a result of the Igbo courageous blood in him, that makes the average Igbo person to survive and succeed against all odds, without respect to the hearse and hardest environment, Dr Omalu fought through threats and verbal abuse to get the great scientific discovery to world.

When his research went through, it became so popular and celebrated to the extend that Mr Will Smith, the iconic American actor had to portray him in a movie titled “Concussion”. Where he is credited with finding out the harsh repercussions of contact sports on children and adults. The movie Concussion starring Will Smith playing Dr Omalu the founder of the disease CTE that causes something he found out that messes a lot of football players heads up really bad from so much brain rocking contact was a worldwide hit.

Dr. Bennet Omalu is equally the author of the book, Truth Doesn’t Have A Side: My Alarming Discovery About The Danger Of Contact Sports. Dr. Omalu wrote this book, to help parents answer the question ‘Do I love football more than I love my child ?’

It is our hope that sooner or later Dr Omalu will be awarded the Nobel prize in medicine for his research that is saving lives all over the globe.

Happy Birthday to this globally acclaimed Enugwu Ukwu-Born, Award Winning Pathologist, Dr Bennett Omalu.
