Ogun agro airport 90% completed -Works commissioner

by AKINBO AKINBODE August 8, 2023
written by AKINBO AKINBODE
  1. The Ogun State Government has said that the agro international airport located at Iperu-Ilishan Road in Illenne Local Government Area of the state was 90 per cent completed.

In a statement on Tuesday, by the National Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, Abdullahi Maiwada, the state Commissioner of Works, Ade Akinsanya, said this when the acting Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, inspected some projects in the state.

Among the projects inspected by the Customs CG included, the proposed 100 hectares Customs Training College, Federal Operations Unit Zone ‘A’ headquarters, government warehouse, and the agro international airport.

Speaking during the visit, Akinsanya highlighted the accessibility of the area and the expected period for completion of agro international cargo airport.

He said, “The target for us to get this project ready is the end of the year. The runway is completely done, the control tower is about 90 per cent, and all the equipment needed is completely procured. In terms of capacity, there is enough room to grow, right now we have a warehouse under construction with a terminal building where you will be able to help us man. So things are taking shape and the governor is pushing us to get everything done by the end of the year.”

Earlier, the Customs boss had expressed delight at the progress made so far and promised to be a responsible neighbour to the state government.

In his words, “We are happy that we are going to be your neighbours, and I can commit to you that we are going to be very responsible neighbours; we are going to operate in a way that will make Ogun State proud”.

Adeniyi urged the contractors to work within the timeframe of the contract period.

He added that the project was going to be very strategic to the future of customs operations in Nigeria.

According to him, “As we try to get our process right, as we try to bring innovation, we now need outstanding infrastructural support to drive these operations.”

The CGC said the service is going to be very strict with the contract period.

“We are going to be very strict with the contract period. We cannot afford the airport to take off too far away before we start here. So we want some kind of development to be happening side by side. I believe that our presence here will add value to the airport just like we believe that the airport will also add value to us”.

Adeniyi, who was in the company of the commissioner, project manager, as well as his management team, undertook a tour of the proposed customs project site and the agro cargo international airport under construction.

[JUST IN] Niger coup: ECOWAS leaders meet Thursday in Abuja

by AKINBO AKINBODE August 7, 2023
written by AKINBO AKINBODE

The Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu who is currently the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States has convened another Extraordinary Summit of the Authority on the political situation in the Republic of Niger.

“The Summit will hold in Abuja, on Thursday, August 10, 2023,” a statement published on the website of the West African regional bloc said on Monday.

“The ECOWAS Leaders will be considering and discussing the political situation and recent developments in Niger during the Summit.”

The PUNCH reports that Niger’s military rulers announced Sunday that they had closed the country’s airspace, warning that any attempt to violate it would meet with an “energetic and immediate response.”

“Faced with the threat of intervention, which is becoming clearer through the preparation of neighbouring countries, Niger’s airspace is closed from this day on Sunday… for all aircraft until further notice,” the country’s new rulers said in a statement.

The announcement came as the deadline from the West African bloc ECOWAS for them to hand back power to the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum was due to expire.

ECOWAS last Sunday issued Niger’s new military rulers with an ultimatum to stand down within the week or face possible military intervention. Bazoum was overthrown on July 26 when members of his own guard detained him at the presidency.

First-half analysis: Overturned penalty keeps Nigeria in game against England

by AKINBO AKINBODE August 7, 2023
written by AKINBO AKINBODE

Nine-time African champions, Super Falcons are still very much in the game after an overturned penalty against European Champions England.

England were awarded a controversial penalty for a foul on Rachel Daly, which was then controversially overturned by VAR. Lauren James was kept very quiet by her marker Halimatu Ayinde, and Chiamaka Nnadozie only had a couple of relatively comfortable saves to make.

The Nigerian defenders are really giving star Lauren James time to shine.
Chiamaka Nnadozie is also keeping her feet and hands ready for possible saves in the game in the 48 minutes when Lucy Bronze almost delivered a cross into the box.

More to come…

Don’t grant terrorists, bandits amnesty, Peace institute tells FG

by AKINBO AKINBODE August 7, 2023
written by AKINBO AKINBODE

The World Institute for Peace has urged the Federal Government not to grant amnesty to terrorists and bandits.

The advice came on the heels of a reported call for amnesty by bandit kingpins in North-Western states on Sunday.

Speaking at the International Peace Conference of the institute on Sunday, WIP Country Director, Lamina Omotoyosi, said instead of amnesty, the government should deploy more resources to flush terrorists and bandits out of the country.

He said, “If we want this country to grow, the government shouldn’t say people will talk if we do this. Government should close their eyes and do what is right.

“The government must say that this is right and should be done.

“Recently, I heard that one of the former governors of Zamfara pleaded for the government to give amnesty to bandits. There were also reports on Sunday that the bandit kingpins in North-West states are clamouring for amnesty. On what basis? For what purpose?

“There should be no amnesty granted to bandits. On what basis would the government give amnesty to bandits? I plead with the Federal Government not to amnesty bandits.

“The Government should use the military. The military is capable of facing any security threat. The criminals want amnesty because of the military onslaught. They bandits cannot be trusted. Military operations against terrorists should be well funded.”

Earlier, guest speaker, Ambassador Pradeep Sapkota, said the government must conquer hunger to truly address insecurity.

Against all odds: Grass-to-grace story of Falcons star Kanu

by AKINBO AKINBODE August 7, 2023
written by AKINBO AKINBODE

Sometimes, humans are faced with challenges that seem insurmountable, but some have a remarkable ability to defy the odds and rise above their circumstances.

They use their strength, resilience and determination to overcome adversity and achieve success, even when the odds are against them.

Super Falcons striker Uchenna Kanu falls in this category of humans.

The fairytale story of Falcons at the ongoing 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand will be incomplete without Uchenna Kanu, the striker who plies her trade for Racing Louisville in the United States’ Women’s National Soccer League.

Kanu played all three group games Down Under as the Nigerians progressed to the knockout stage of the competition for the third time in their history unbeaten.

However, her role in the 3-2 comeback win against co-hosts Australia August 21 is still very fresh in the minds of the Nigerian football faithful.

Playing against the home fans, who vociferously rooted for their team at the packed Lang Park stadium in Brisbane, the Falcons fell behind, a minute into first half added time, courtesy of an Emily Louise van Egmond’s opener.

And cometh the hour, cometh the woman, as Kanu tapped in from close range to earn an equaliser five minutes later to ensure both teams returned to the locker room tied 1-1.

Two second half goals from veteran defender Ohale Osinachi and substitute Asisat Oshoala helped the Nigerians to  a nail-biting 3-2 victory to spark rapturous celebrations among Nigerians back home and in the diaspora.

A soft-spoken, quiet, rather self-effacing, laid-back woman, Kanu approaches everything with a very relaxed attitude and that is often reflected in every aspect of her game.

The way she scored the equaliser against Australia perfectly expressed her character. It was relaxed and unhurried, just simply placing the ball into the corner of the net like it took no effort at all.

Yet, not many know that Kanu would not have had the opportunity to showcase the stuff she’s made of on women’s football’s highest stage, if she had caved in to her dad’s resistance against her playing football.

Most Nigerian parents often frown at their girl-child indulging in sporting activities, rather preferring them to go to school.

“My dad, he was a bit difficult for reasons I didn’t know. You know, for the typical Nigerian female,  it’s always hard engaging in sports because of the tradition, different cultures, the social norms and all that stuff,” Kanu told PUNCH Sports Extra.

The then teenager incurred her dad’s wrath for playing football, which saw her repeatedly punished.

“I mean, it would be just me kneeling down for a long time and then I would cry, just little things like that,” Kanu added.

“But he (dad) was really mad at me, especially when he would come back and I didn’t maybe wash the dishes or clean the house or things like that, before I went out to play; he would be really mad at me.”

Other parents also kicked against their female kids playing football, and because of lack of support from her dad, she ended up playing barefooted with boys.

“I would still go out on the streets, with no shoes, and play with the boys. He would get mad, especially because I was playing with boys, but I didn’t stop.  I kept doing it anyway.”

However, Kanu’s mum, who also played football in school, was supportive.

Several of the country’s big name women’s footballers also served as an inspiration to the kid, who had made up her mind not to give on her dream.

“I used to look up to a lot of Super Falcons players: Stella Mbachu,  Perpetua Nkwocha and Desire Oparanozie.

“I looked up to them because they were playing for the national team. I was hearing their names and I was really motivated and inspired to be like them. I was just dreaming to just play one day like them.

“And I’m super thankful that now I have Desire as a teammate on the Falcons team and that’s like a dream as well.  I’m really glad that I’m able to play to this level and play with my role model.  So, it’s like a dream.”

Kanu, now 26, has been making her mark for seven years, since her prodigious talent as a youngster caught the eye of officials of Southeastern Fire, who represent Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida in intercollegiate football in the US.

This was after she represented Nigeria at the 2014 U-17 and U-20 Women’s World Cups.

Lakeside was the right ground for Kanu to flourish, as she broke and set records for her college and also earned a degree in Sports Management from the Southeastern University.

The 5ft 6in forward scored an unbelievable 159 goals for the collegiate side between 2016 and 2019, which sparked wild celebrations among the Lakeland football faithful.

While there, Kanu scored 25 hat-tricks and was the United States Soccer Coaches NAIA Player of The Year in 2018, a two-time Sun Conference Player of The Year, three-time First Team All Conference Player, 2016 Sun Conference Newcomer of The Year, and a 16-time Sun Conference Player of The Week.

The Mayor of Lakeland, Florida named every November 18 the Uchenna Kanu Day, in appreciation of her groundbreaking strides.

Till date, no man or woman has come close to equalling Kanu’s goal-scoring heroics in Lakeland.

The striker admits her stint with Southeastern Fire remains the best moment of her career so far.

“I scored a lot of goals for my school and I won a bunch of awards: Player of The Year, Player of The month and Player of The Tournament,” she said. “My biggest one in college was having a record 159 goals for both the men and women’s division.  I was the highest goals scorer in college, so that’s like my biggest achievement in college. Also, I have a day, November 18, dedicated to me for setting that record.”

She left Lakeland for Pensacola FC Women, where she began her senior pro career, and scored 17 goals in 12 matches from 2018 to 2020.

Kanu then had a short stopover at Spanish side Sevilla before moving to Sweden’s Linkopings for one season and again the goals flowed, scoring 22 in 42 appearances to emerge top scorer.

Mexican giants Tigres UANL Femenil secured Kanu’s services for the 2022/23 season, and the Nigerian’s goals, 22 in 38 games, fired her side to the Campeon de Campeones title, before joining NWSL team Racing Louisville this year.

At country level, she got a surprise call-up to the 2019 World Cup few weeks after her senior debut in a WAFU tournament in Ivory Coast.

And now, following her second appearance on women’s football’s biggest stage in Australia, Kanu’s career truly depicts her middle name, Grace.

Herders attacks frustrating FG irrigation farming scheme – AFAN

by AKINBO AKINBODE August 7, 2023
written by AKINBO AKINBODE

The Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria in Benue State, Aondongu Saaku, says incessant attacks by killer herdsmen have led to a drastic reduction in irrigation farming in the state, despite support by the Federal Government.

Saaku said over 500 hectares of farmlands along riverine areas had been abandoned by farmers, over security concerns.

According to him, irrigation farming inputs supplied to farmers in Benue State by the Federal Government are now lying fallow.

The AFAN chairman, who spoke to journalists at the weekend, said, “Insecurity is the major bane of irrigation farming in Benue State because when you prepare the farmlands at the river banks the presence of armed herdsmen make it impossible for you to continue.

“Most of the communities around the river banks of River Benue are affected, beginning from the branch of River Katsina-Ala down to Logo area, from Ayilamo to Anyebe, where we are planning the irrigation farming because the land is good

“But because the vegetation is always green there, the herders that usually come in their numbers make use of these river banks to graze their cattle.

“So it becomes impossible and some people who actually struggled and farm around these river banks in the past lost their lives. So, since then,  farmers have been afraid to go to such areas.

“Over 500 hectares of farmland along the river banks have remained uncultivated as a result of insecurity.

“If you go to my office now some tools meant for irrigation farming that the Federal Government supplied us,  such as machines, fallow pumps and solar mobile irrigation pumps, are lying fallow. No farmer is ready to have them because of fear.”

Saaku appealed to the Federal Government for security at the river banks across the state to enable farmers to engage in irrigation farming.
